What is EMDR?

Developed by Dr Francine Shapiro a renowned psychologist to treat people with severe phobias and post traumatic stress disorders and people subjected to severe abuse, both can be regarded as trauma.

In simple terms, humans use their eyes to access memories and process thoughts and concepts. Just think how often you look around with your eyes to find the answer to something or recall something.

Francine noticed that by patients accessesing traumatic memories and then under guidance moving the eyes in a particular directions, it allowed the person to literally re process the traumatic event to a manageable level.

Its important to say that the memory isn’t taken away but instead changes how the memory effects us. It can move from highly distressing to manageable in a few short sessions.
